Kestrel is proud to be joining a ground-breaking consortium led by Owen Mumford and CPI to fundamentally change the way medical devices are designed and manufactured by adopting circularity principles from day 1.
We’re not just designing new drug delivery devices – we’re redefining HOW they’re designed – to enhance supply resilience, reduce reliance on costly imports and reduce environmental impact.
The project demonstrated that taking back and remanufacturing these devices, rather than disposing them after single use, minimises environmental impacts, does not compromise patient safety and has commercial benefits. We had a very productive and enthusiastic day that featured:
- A review of the proposed top level aims and objectives of the project.
- A workstream planning session with different groups working out the details of how we are going to design, make, distribute, take back and remanufacture the devices while maintaining patient safety and regulatory compliance.
- Great presentations from Conor ONeill from GSK about their approach to sustainable manufacture of injectable products and Liam Hogg from NHS England about the NHS’s commitment to massively reduce the amount of clincial waste sent to landfill or incineration.
- Contributions from Chris Nash from BSI about the role of standards in remanufacturing of these devices, from Remi Ogunseye from Department of Health and Social Care about the Design for Life programme which aims to incentivise the circular economy in healthcare, from Steve Hoare from MHRA about the evidence needed for regulators to issue new guidence.
Many thanks to everyone who joined us on the day, shared their expertise, and contributed to the proposal Millan-John Gilson, Ph.D Johannes Korte, Cormac O’Prey, Michael Watts, Mat Roberts, Virlina Choquette, Samantha Gan, Jitesh Halai, Fatema Haidar, Yan WANG, Mark Hammond, Nikita Mistry and to the organising team at CPI and Owen Mumford; including; Alex Cole, Karthik Nair, Jim McGuire, Alex Fong, Michael Stone, Aimee Laycock, Alice Irving.
We are now working towards a deadline of the end of June for submission of the proposal, but we are still open to new partners joining. So, if you think you or your organisation could contribute to our grand challenge, then please reach out to me and let’s talk.
