Kestrel Technology consulting was invited to chair this month’s BSI TPR 1/7/5 Sustainable Design for Medical Devices National Standards committee meeting in London, with guest speaker Tom Frantz, Director of Material development at Technimark LLC, chair of the BOD of the Association of
Plastics Recyclers, member of the Executive committee of the Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council, and technical contact of ASTM 60.42 WK88282 (Designing for Recyclability of Single Use Products and Packaging use in Healthcare Applications).
During the presentation a number of items, including the following, were touched on
and discussed:
- The circular/sustainable state-of-play in the UK, Europe and the USA;
other parts of the BS/ISO 8887 series and how they might be used and/or referred to in
the new work; terminology issues; - The need for a project plan approach.
- In addition, a number of items were shared in the meeting chat. In terms of the latest
version of the NHS’ Net Zero Roadmap, Nicole Fletcher shared the following

She added that the focus is on delivery of the milestones from 2022 to 2028
We will be chairing these on a quarterly basis to support industry efforts to adopt commercially viable sustainable design and manufacture, with the next even booked for October 15th
